Healthcare Reform hanging by a thread

by on January 11, 2010

According to CNBC, Sen Chris Dodd has reported that it’s one or two votes that could swing the Healthcare Reform legislation.

As far as I’m concerned, I’d like to snip the thread.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally support the need to make changes, even sweeping changes.  BUT, I don’t like the idea that 500 or so guys are going to get together and make good decisions…at least not on something that is so hugely complex and hotly contested.  Too many tradeoffs and last minute deals thta could have unintended but catastophic consequences

I would much prefer taking smaller incremental steps whereby we can assess the effect of the change on the entire Healthcare system.  When you make sweeping changes, it’s very hard to predict how things will play out and lots of people could end up worse off.

What’s really scary is that some of the people trying to make new policy are using Canada and the UK as role  models.  Ask folks there whether they appreciate their system.

I also don’t want these guys voting on a system that they don’t have to live with either.  Right now, Congress and many top level government employees have the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP).  By all accounts the benefits are head and shoulders above what the rest of us have access to.

Let’s be careful about Healthcare Reform…
