What’s it all about, anyway?

Been thinking about life, actually life after death, after life, post-life…and if you admit the possibility of that, then pre-life too.  Most, if not all, religions embrace the premise but can there be a supporting proof from science?

I don’t lay any claim to specific scientific knowledge and chances are probably better than even, that what I have absorbed and base some of my suppositions upon is half baked in some respect or other.  But, such as it is, here goes…

Most scientists seem to have bought into the BIG BANG theory which basically says that the entire universe was created in a ginormous explosion of matter that emanated from a tiny speck.

So, it seems to me a reasonable assumption that PRE big bang was also nothing, at least as far as the tangible universe we know today.

We know the universe is expanding which means it has an outer edge.  It is expanding into, inside? nothing.  Is nothing something?  Was the nothing created or is it eternal? If it has no beginning, was it always was or always wasn’t?  Can something that always was have an end?  If so, would something be left?  Yeah, my head hurts, too.

Hmmm, is the nothing in something?  I read about these little ceramic spheres that are used in some hi tech coatings and which have a vacuum inside.  Got the analogy?  Sorry for the digression…;)

So back to God…to me, this whole thing sounds a lot like the story of creation, just spread out over a few more years.  The idea that creation happened over a week as reported by most bibles is the incredulous part.  (I’d love to know more about how other religions handle the issue.)  But basicallyI have no problem with it because I understand it as an attempt to explain complicated stuff to a shepherd 5000 years ago.  It’s the principles that are important.  We’ll revisit this theme of literal versus figurative from different perspectives in several subsequent posts.
