Politics be damned

by on December 13, 2010

Our system of two party politics anchors just about everything that gets done governmentally speaking…and right now that anchor feels like it is secured to my ankles and I’m about to be dropped overboard.

With party ideology driving the talking heads, Obama has emerged as the rational voice of compromise.  Rather than jumping on board, both parties are squabbling like two-year olds…eg, it’s all about them.  This makes the president the only adult in the group.  Not a bad strategy for him given that John Q Public is damned tired of politics getting in the way of achieving results.

My only question is whether the president was clever enough to predict the juvenile reaction to his latest proposal or did he just luck out?

Gov Christie…What are You Thinking?

December 10, 2010

Geez, Gov…Really?!  Selling t-shirts?  I got an email from the NJ GOP offering Gov Christie Holiday t-shirts for sale.  How about an HDTV?  Can you say Tacky? I hope you’re embarrassed ‘cuz I’m definitely embarrassed for you. I thought watching the idiots on both sides of the aisle posturing this past week in Washington was [...]

NPR – News Done Right

August 16, 2010

I’m a big fan of NPR and generally listen to it unless there’s a Giants football game on.  Here’s a great example of how they bring views of the world from different (and sometimes really weird) perspectives to the fore.  Click here for “the Picture Show”. This piece isn’t about countries per se, or governments, [...]

The bank deal wrap up

August 16, 2010

Well, it’s over.  Thanks to everyone who offered advice. My final agreement doesn’t allow me to disclose the terms (hmmm, by disclosing that did I violate the agreement?).  The company in question has a published standard of corporate behavior called the “newspaper test”.  The standard is meant to guard against behavior that they wouldn’t want [...]

My Banker’s mistake(s)…

July 17, 2010

The error was certainly not deliberate, but my bankers tried to bury their mistake rather than square things up with me.  Now that they admit to the mistake, they’re dancing around trying to buy me off for less than they owe me.  They have so far refused to give me any basis of calculation that [...]

OOP’s, maybe we did make a little innocent mistakey

July 17, 2010

We left off at the point where I suddenly received a phone call from a women who said she was a regional head of trust matters…whatever that means.  If she means trust as in trustworthy, she has her hands full. She was very pleasant, and I mean VERY pleasant as she explained that there was [...]

Bankers…II

July 14, 2010

So, now to pick up the story.  It’s early April, about six weeks or so after I finally receive my distribution…and the subject is still sticking in my craw.  So I decide to ask a friend in the financial advising business what he thinks.  I tell him the story and his advice is to ask [...]

My Banker has My Back…and the Dagger’s in up to the Hilt

June 29, 2010

Wow!  I always thought banks had to operate on some code of honor.  That they were more upright than the average financial advisor/broker.  I no longer think that way.  Let me tell you about what I’m experiencing with my bank. I wanted to enter into a business with my daughter.  The purchase price was steep [...]

Fax Spammers…

April 30, 2010

I routinely receive spam faxes that waste paper and ink.  Just today, I liberated my fax out bin of an accumulated pile of spam garbage.  I recently saw a great article on a font that had “holes” in it but looks like the popular Arial font.  Reportedly, it can save you about 10% of your ink cost.  [...]
